14 district election commissions of the Vitebsk oblast registered 46 initiative groups to put forward candidates for the seats in the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament seeking nominations through signature collection, BelTA learnt from Leonid Dorofeenko, the deputy head of the management and human resources department of the Vitebsk oblast executive committee. A substantial part of the candidates nominated by signature collection stated to be independent. Only 11 initiative groups were registered following an application submitted by political parties, namely the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (“Gramada”) and the Belarusian Popular Front – three initiative groups each, the United Civil Party and the Belarusian Party of Communists – two initiative groups each and the Communist Party of Belarus – one initiative group. The nomination of candidates is in top gear in Belarus now. It will run through August 18. 948 polling stations will be open in the region. The formation of the district election commissions will be complete by August 13. The elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus are scheduled for September 28, 2008. |
