The year 2006 is coming to an end. The year began the next five-year stage of development of the country and our oblast. The start was rather vigorous. A good beginning secures half of the success.

The authorities have been concentrating their efforts on key problems of the Republic of Belarus and its citizens. Those were, first of all, material production, social and cultural sphere, agribusiness, social security, demographic security and other fields and branches of the economy.

The stable society, economic growth, better living standards for people helped preserve the trust in authorities, support for the policy pursued by Belarus leadership. The fact was proved by results of the Belarusian president elections held in early 2006.

An essential achievement, we have preserved positive tendencies of the land’s social and economic development witnessed in recent years and secured dynamic development of all economic branches and sales profitability growth, decreased the number of unprofitable economic entities.

2006 was rich in events meaningful for Vitebsk oblast. The oblast came first in the national grain harvesting competition. For the first time an oblast festival Dazhynki was held. It took place in Postavy. The town also hosted Belarus Literature Days.

This year we continued holding prestigious international festival, including the fifteenth international arts festival Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk. We became richer with another popular holiday — the first festival of Orthodox Christian Culture Orthodox Belarus held in Orsha.

People love these holidays, which cheer them up, inspire optimism and friendly mood, and bring good working attitudes.

In January 2007, elections to local councils of people’s deputies will be held. At every level we should create hard-working councils consisting of reliable, experienced, wise, and judicious people with an active civil and political stance.

For the future to be happy and successful, the economic base is being laid down. All of us have to take care of our native land, do our best to enhance and accomplish it, make it richer, cleaner, stronger, more comfortable and beautiful.
