Manuscripts first mention Beshenkovichy in relation to the year 1460. The name of the settlement located on the bank of the Zapadnaya Dvina River comes from the word “beshen’”, which means “fast waters”. Traditional occupations are pottery, making soap and wooden roofing materials. Among other old settlements are the villages of Bochejkovo, Ostrovno, and Oolla. Beshenkovichy district is located in the central part ofVitebsk region; its area is 1.4 thousand square kilometers. The district was formed in 1924. There are 242 localities on its territory where more than 21 thousand people reside. District's government consists of 7 villages’ Councils of Deputies. Agricultural sector with its main specializations in the production of dairy and meat products, grain, and flax plays the leading role in the District’s economy. District’s agriculture includes 16 agricultural enterprises and 12 farms. In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, 11 agro-towns will be created in the District by 2010; last year, the village of Ostrovno became an agro-town. 7 District's industrial enterprises manufacture saddlery, timber products, flax fiber, boilers, and food products. Forests cover one fifth of the District’s territory where hunting tourism is being promoted. There are 55 lakes in the District. Among historical sites of the District a park and palace in the village of Bochejkovo holds a special place; it is the only French park preserved on the territory of Belarus. |
