Dokshytsy is one of the oldest towns in Vitebsk region. It is first mentioned in the chronicles in 1407. As scientists believe, its name can originate from the Celtic word “dok”, a place for threshing. The distance from Dokshytsy to Vitebsk is 187 km and 130 km to Minsk. Dokshytsy district is situated in the south-west of Vitebsk region and its area is 2.2 thousand square kilometers. It was formed in 1940. District's government consists of 10 villages’ and 1 town’s Councils of Deputies. The population of the District is 32.6 thousand people that reside in 276 localities among them Dokshytsy is a borough, Begoml’ is a town, and the rest are villages. 11 agricultural production cooperatives, 6 unitary enterprises and several farms comprise District’s agriculture. Primary area of specialization is the production of dairy and meat products. In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, 12 agro-towns will be created in the District by 2010; last year, the village of Torgoony became an agro-town; this year 2 villages, Porplishche and Proodniky, will get the status of an agro-town. There are 9 industrial fuel, construction, and food enterprises. Watershed of the Baltic and Black seas goes through the territory of the District. 40% of the District's territory is covered with forests. There are 11 lakes in the District. 18% of the District’s land belongs to the Berezinsky biosphere nature reservation. There are also Vilejsky, Goloobitskaya pushcha, and Servech hydrologic nature reserves. The oak in the park of the Sitsy village is more than 450 years old. It is protected as a nature’s unique object. |
