The territory of the present day Dubrovno district is first mentioned in the chronicles in 1393, while the town of Dubrovno appeared in the chronicles only in 1514. Dubrovno district occupies the south-eastern part of Vitebsk region; its area is 1.3 thousand square kilometers. It borders on the Russian Federation. The stretch of the border is 77 km. The modern history of the District started in 1924. Its administrative centre, the borough of Dubrovno, is 90 km away from Vitebsk and 230 km away from Minsk. There are 144 rural localities, 1 town, Osintorf, and 1 borough, Dubrovno; the total population of all localities is about 20 thousand people. District's government consists of 9 villages’ Councils of Deputies. 62.6% of the territory of the District is given to the agriculture with its 19 enterprises and 14 farms. They specialize mainly in cattle breeding, grain and flax growing. In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, 20 agro-towns will be created in the District by 2010; the village of Svatoshytsy was the first agro-town in the District. Flax factory in Dubrovno is the largest of the 4 District’s industrial enterprises. About one fifth of the territory of the District is covered with forests. The Dnepr River crosses the territory of the District and it’s this River that gave its name to the folk music festival of the along-Dnepr Slavs “Dnepr voices in Dubrovno” that invites folk groups from the Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. |
