Gorodok district

 

First, a settlement called Gorodok appeared on the map dated 1579. In 1777 it became a town.

Gorodok district formed in 1924 is located in the north-east of Vitebsk region and has the area of 3.1 thousand square kilometers. In the north, it borders on the Russian Federation. The centre of the District, the borough of Gloubokoje, is 30 km away from Vitebsk and 187 km away from Minsk.

There are 10 Councils in the District that have 332 localities in total. The population of the District is 30.2 thousand people with 13.8 thousands residing in Gorodok.

Agricultural sector with its main specializations in dairy and meat cattle-breeding, eggs production, and grain growing plays the leading role in the District’s economy. District’s agricultural sector includes 12 agricultural enterprises and 15 farms.

In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, the village of Palminka has been given the status of an agro-town. Before 2010, 7 more localities will acquire this status.

Among 6 industrial enterprises the overhaul plant, forestry, and an affiliate of the “Moloko” concern in Gorodok takes the leading place.

More than 40% of the District's territory is covered with forests where many rare and endangered species find their home. 162 lakes create picturesque landscapes. There are 2 botanical, 1 biological, lake ichthyologic, hydrologic, and ornithological nature reserves.

Nature lovers can find a rare plant, water nut on several lakes and rivers in the District. The scientists believe that this is a relict pre-Ice Age plant. In the village of Proudniky there is an oak that is considered to be about 650 years old.

Several archeological, historical, and cultural monuments have been lovingly preserved on the territory of the District.
