Settlements on the territory of the present day Liozno district are first mentioned in relation to the beginning of the XVIth century. Liozno dates back to 1650. Liozno district is located in the east of Vitebsk region and borders on the Russian Federation. The stretch of border is 86 km. The District was formed in 1924; its area is 1.4 thousand square kilometers with the population of more than 19 thousand people. The town of Liozno is the centre of the District; it is located in 40 km from Vitebsk and 270 km from Minsk. The District is divided into 6 administrative units, Councils, that unite 171 localities. Agriculture with its main specialization in cattle-breeding plays the leading role in the District’s economy. The share of milk and meat products in the bulk production is 70%. District’s agriculture includes 14 agricultural enterprises and 1 farm. In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, 13 villages will get the status of an agro-town by 2010; the village of Veleshkovichy was the first to get this status. 6 enterprises producing timber, ready-made clothes, flax fiber, and processing agricultural products comprise the industrial sector of the District’s economy. More than 40% of the District’s territory is woodlands cut through by rivers and opening up to the lakes, which creates unique charm of the area. |
