The town of Postavy started from a small settlement Posadnik that was well-known for its mill. In 1409 it acquired the status of a town and was renamed to Postavy, the word used in old Belarus to call a millstone. Postavy district occupies the south-western part of Vitebsk region. Its area is 2.1 thousand square kilometers, where 44 thousand people reside in 505 localities. The distance from Postavy to Minsk is 165 km, and to Vitebsk it is 240 km. The District was created in 1940, but the present shape was formed in 1965. District's government consists of 11 villages’ Councils of Deputies. In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, 10 villages will get the status of an agro-town by 2010; last year, this status was given to the village of Kamajy, 2 more villages, Lyintoopy and Doonilovichy, will soon get this status. In the agricultural sector, the largest of 21 District's enterprises is the “Kamajskiy” production agricultural cooperative, which produces almost one fourth of all agricultural products in the District. 13 industrial enterprises of the District are timber processing factories, construction materials and radio-technical plants. One third of the District’s territory is covered with forests; marshes take up 5% of the territory. The District has 114 lakes, 16 water reserves, 86 rivers, one of them, Strucha, is the cleanest river on the territory of Belarus. The District hosts a part of the of the Narochansky national park and a hydrologic reservation, Shvakshty, a home to 40% of vertebral animal species found in Belarus. |
