As philologists believe, the name of this town comes form the word "rosy", dew, and it has its reason - this place is often called "the land of crystal dew" as there are numerous rivers and creeks that cross this territory. Rossony, presently a borough, is first mentioned in the manuscripts in 1552. The District started its history in 1924. Rossony district is situated in the north-western part of Vitebsk region and has the area of 1.9 thousand square kilometers. In the north, it borders on the Russian Federation and stands in 150 km from Vitebsk and 276 km from Minsk. District's government consists of 6 villages’ Councils of Deputies that unite 140 localities with 13 thousand people. Agriculture is the main branch of District's economy with 2 primary areas of specialization: cattle breeding and grain crops growing; in total there are 8 agricultural enterprises in the District. In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, the village of Krasnopol'je was given the status of an agro-town, 5 more villages will get this status by 2010. There are 3 industrial enterprises with Obol'sk brick and pottery plant's subsidiary and Rossony forestry being the largest. Within the last years, eco-, agro-, and hunting tourism started to develop. Huge forests that cover 60% of the District's territory and 186 lakes create picturesque landscapes. To preserve this beautiful land, 2 national and 5 local landscape protection reservations have been created. |
