The town of Senno is first mentioned in the manuscripts in 1534, but there is data that the village of Senno existed already in the middle of the XVth century. At that time in this village big fairs were held where people traded "seno", hay; thus, the village got its name.

At the end of the XVIIIth century the town received a Coat of Arms as a gift: "Two golden scythes in a golden field as a sign of wealth in hay, from which the town its name got".

The town is situated in 55 km from Vitebsk and in 210 km from Minsk.

Senno district occupies the south-eastern part of Vitebsk region; the area of the District is 1.9 thousand square kilometers with about 30 thousand people residing in 334 localities. The District was created in July, 1966. 

District's government consists of 1 towns’ and 8 villages’ Councils of Deputies.

There are 20 agricultural enterprises working in the District. They specialize in dairy and and meat cattle breeding and flax growing.

In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, the District will have 15 agro-towns by 2010. Last year, the village of Moshkany was given the status of an agro-town.

There are 6 industrial processing and food production enterprises in the District. The powdered fat-free milk production plant provides about 50% of the bulk food products production.

Senno district is rich in forests that cover more than 40% of the territory, and lakes (there are 71 of them). The District is famous for its second large rock on the territory of Belarus - Devil's rock. Its length is 10.2 m, width - 6 m, height above ground level - 4 m.
