Ushachy district

 

The village of Ushacha, the name of which most probably comes from the name of the nearby river, is first mentioned in the Polotsk registry of 1522. At present, Ushachi is a borough and district centre located within 150 km away from Vitebsk and 220 km from Minsk.

Ushachi district is located in the central part of Vitebsk region. It was first created in 1924, and its present administrative borders were formed in 1966. The area of the District is 1.5 thousand square kilometers; the population is 19.6 thousand people residing in 259 localities.

District's government consists of 7 villages’ Councils of Deputies.

The main industry in the District is agriculture: 11 agricultural enterprises and 11 farms specialize in growing grain crops and cattle breeding.

In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, the District will have 6 agro-towns by 2010. The village of Orekhovno was the first to acquire the status of an agro-town.

There are 12 industrial enterprises on the territory of the District including a flax factory and a complex for production of manufactured goods.

More than one third of the territory of the District is covered with woods; there are 11 rivers and 154 lakes with 5 of them larger than 7.5 square kilometers. Unique nature of the District, its springs of mineral waters, rivers and lakes create ideal places for tourist and recreation facilities such the present “Vechel’e” and “Lesnyje ozeora” facilities.
