Vitebsk district lies in the north-east of Vitebsk region. Its area is 2.8 thousand square kilometers. From north to south it stretches for 100 km, and from east to west – for almost 50 km. In the east, it borders on the Russian Federation. The distance from Vitebsk to Minsk is 250 km. The District was formed in 1924, and in 1960 it got its present administrative borders. The District includes 367 localities where almost 42 thousand people (2.1 thousands of them are town dwellers) reside. District's government consists of 13 villages’ and 2 towns' Councils of Deputies. The scope of production of the District is targeted to satisfy the needs of the region centre, the city of Vitebsk, mainly in agricultural products. The share of the District’s agricultural goods production in the bulk region's production of such goods is 13-14%. There are 71 agricultural enterprises in the District producing milk, meat, potatoes, and greenhouse vegetables. In accordance with the state program of Rural Revival and Development, 17 agro-towns will be created in the District by 2010; last year, the villages of Ol’govo and Novka became agro-towns. District’s industry consists of 6 veterinary, processing, and timber goods production enterprises. The Zapadnaya Dvina River crosses the territory of the District. There are 68 lakes in the District. 45% of the District's territory is covered with woods and 5% are marshes and underwater areas. There are 3 national cranberry, ornithological, and 6 botanical nature reserves on the territory of the District. Facilities for rest and recuperation such as a sanatorium, “Letsy”, and several tourist lodges work all year round. There are also more than 200 archeological, architecture, and historical monuments. |
