In the 2005-2006 school year the Region had 694 secondary schools including 4 lyceums and 15 gymnasiums.

Some of the schools in the Region, namely boarding schools-gymnasiums in Luzhesnyansk, Polotsk, and Shoumilino, gymnasiums in Braslav, Glubokoje, and Chashniki, a lyceum in Domzheritsy, and specialized biology and chemistry classes at Vitebsk lyceum #1, operate under the republican initiative “Gifted children” aimed at supporting the children living in villages and towns and showing talents in various subjects.

Experiments held in the Region covered 19 areas of education and pedagogic, and 14 administrative areas within the Region; pedagogical innovations were trialed in 273 educational establishments, there were 17 experimental sites in the Region.

According to the economy demands, the scope of knowledge and diversity of qualifications possessed by college and university graduates were constantly improved. Thus, about 70% of the graduates have mastered 2 and more qualifications by the time of their graduation.

In accordance with this, some of the 35 profession schools of the Region were reorganized into trade colleges (4 of them) and trade lyceums (14 of them).

The system of secondary specialized trade schools includes 24 schools, the oldest of which is a 130-year-old Polotsk college. Vitebsk state technical college has been selected to be the focal point for coordinating and driving educational activities of all such schools in the Region.

The system of secondary specialized education has shifted its education plan to integrate with the university specialties.

The system of higher education includes 5 state universities. They provided education to more than 30 thousand students in various areas: medicine, pedagogic, veterinary, engineering, law, etc.

Each year about 4 thousand graduates enter various industries, scientific, and research facilities of the Region and the Republic.

The staff of the universities is more than 2 thousand teachers and tutors, among them there are 122 PhDs, 865 Ms, 111 Professors, 613 docents, Academicians and Associate Members of the State Academy of Sciences, members of the Art Union of the Republic Of Belarus, etc.

The State pays much attention to the support of the gifted students. Special Fund of the President of the Republic of Belarus for the Social Support of Gifted Students and Pupils identified and stimulated most gifted of the students.
