116 in-patients and 98 out-patients institutions provide medical assistance to the population of the Region; 429 institutions for medical and obstetric attendance, 73 medical rooms, 33 regional hospitals, and 19 medical institutions for senior citizens are in the rural areas. In the course of establishing agro villages, the resource and technical base of 13 medical rooms, 2 regional hospitals, 2 medical institutions for senior citizens, and 11 institutions for medical and obstetric attendance have been considerably improved. These institutions were re-equipped with modern medical appliances and vehicles. There are 4700 doctors and more than 15 thousand nurses working in the health care system of the Region; in the towns, the ratio of doctors per 10 thousand residents has recently grown from 38.0 to 39.4; in the regional centre the ratio is now 79.1. In the rural areas, there are 1285 doctors. For rural areas, the ratio of doctors per 10 thousand residents has recently grown from 17.3 (in 2004) to 20.0. The overall ratio of lower medical personnel per 10 thousand residents has recently increased from 112.0 to 114.2. Statistical showings have recently identified some improvements of the state of health of the population, birth rate has increased, mortality has stabilized, and infants’ mortality has decreased. Primary medical characteristics for cardiology such as the rate of in-hospital mortality of acute myocardial infarction and resumption of professional activities after myocardial infarction continue to improve as well. Now Regional medical cardio centre “Kardiologiya” is a highly specialized modern institution, which provides cardio therapy treatment and cardio surgery for implanting pacemakers. Regional hospital is a medical institution working for the population of the entire Region. It was opened in 1935; now it includes 21 departments and several subsidiary services. Some of the Chairs of Vitebsk Medical University work on the base of this hospital. Primary target of the Regional hospital is to provide medical care to the population of the rural areas where people cannot get specialized medical treatment. The aim of Vitebsk regional diagnostic centre is to provide specialized diagnostic and consultation services with the help of modern diagnostic techniques and equipment to the population of Vitebsk and the Region. Vitebsk regional children hospital was established in 1926; it now consists of 13 departments and as the main medical institution for children, provides all kinds of medical treatment for the children including emergency cases and consultations. In 1991, on the basis of the intensive care and anesthesiology department, a new emergency centre with 2 mobile emergency teams was organized. This centre has about 700 calls each year when they go to various medical institutions within Vitebsk region in case of emergency. Each year more than 13 thousand children are treated in the hospital. Regional dental care system was established in December 1957. Now it is the most rapidly growing branch of health care system where latest techniques, modern materials, and various types of professional training are used. |
